Question

AI-generated images come under creation, and this is haram by consensus — for example, I give my own picture and make a video from it? How correct is this statement, what are the facts, and if they cannot be made, what could the evidences be?

Answer
Summary of the Answer

And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings 1.

And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings

1. The basis of the prohibition: making an image of a living being — by hand, by camera, or by AI — carries a severe warning in the authentic hadiths: “The people most severely punished with Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be the image-makers” (Sahih al-Bukhari: 5950, Sahih Muslim: 2109); “Every image-maker will be in the Fire” (Sahih Muslim: 2110).

2. Why an AI image is “creation”: AI does not merely copy — from instructions and image data it produces a new, complete form of a living being that did not exist before; this falls under “image-making” and “imitating Allah's creation”. Having a video made by giving one's own picture is also included in this same prohibition.

3. Detail of the claim of “consensus”: the position of the majority of scholars and contemporary fiqh bodies: an image of a living being, by whatever means, is haram — so an AI image is also haram. Some contemporaries have discussed a concession regarding the camera's capturing of a reflection, but an AI image is not the capturing of a reflection; it is a new creation — the opinion allowing a concession does not apply to it. The word “consensus” may be debatable in some cases, but the majority agree that producing a new image/video of a living being through AI is haram.

4. A video from one's own picture: it falls under this same ruling — the creation of a new form, included in the generality of the warning against image-making, the meaning of imitating Allah's creation.

Summary: Making an image/video of a living being through AI — even from one's own picture — falls under the prohibition of image-making; avoiding it is necessary.
