Question

How is it for women to sell the hair that falls out from the comb?

Answer
Summary of the Answer

Selling the hair that falls out while combing (broken hair), after collecting it, is completely haram and impermissible in the Shariah.

Selling the hair that falls out while combing (broken hair), after collecting it, is completely haram and impermissible in the Shariah. In the light of the principles of the Book and the Sunnah and the understanding of the righteous predecessors, the buying and selling of any part of the human body (including hair) is absolutely not permitted.

1. The principle of the honour of mankind: "وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِي آدَمَ" (And We have certainly honoured the children of Adam) [Surah al-Isra: 70] — man's whole body, his limbs and the parts that separate from him (hair, nails) are honourable; man is not commercial merchandise, and selling his hair is contrary to the honour of mankind.

2. The prohibition of joining hair: The fallen hair is generally bought by those who make wigs/hair extensions. "لَعَنَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الوَاصِلَةَ وَالمُسْتَوْصِلَةَ" (The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, cursed the woman who joins hair and the woman who asks for it to be joined) [Sahih al-Bukhari: 5937, Sahih Muslim: 2122] — when the use itself is haram, providing the raw material for it and trading in it is also haram.

3. The position of the imams and the Permanent Committee: Trade in human hair is void; "no part of the human body is property"; its sale is invalid and a sin, and the money obtained from it is consuming what is haram.

The correct method: Bury fallen hair/cut nails in the earth or dispose of them in a safe way, so that they are not misused (sorcery, wigs) and the sanctity of covering is preserved.

Summary: Selling fallen hair for a few coins is impermissible; refrain from this earning and bury the hair or destroy it.
